1 DAY TREK KUANGSI WATERFALL
Itinerary
Luang Prabang – Hiking to Kuangsi (B/L/-) ~ 8,5km hiking
Leave Luang Prabang behind, you head out by vehicle to Ban Long Lao, a Hmong minority village. Wander around to learn more about life in this rural lowland Lao and Hmong community. Following trek leads you first for about half an hour through paddy fields before entering dense mixed growth jungle with a remarkable diversity of tree species. After 3 hours of an up-and-down hike through the forest, you reach Khuang Si Waterfalls.
Visit the Free the Bears Sanctuary, to see first hand the good work being done to help the bears. The sanctuary was opened in 2003 and houses Asiatic Black bears which were cubs when they were confiscated by the Forestry Department as they were being taken to the markets for sale. All are growing rapidly and are in good health. Khuang Si Waterfalls, where water tumbles over multi-tiered limestone formations into cool and crystal clear pools, is ideal for anyone seeking an enjoyable escape when the heat becomes unbearable.
These waterfalls are a paradise setting surrounded by lush forest. Spend your time splashing around in the pools or walking along the forest paths in the upper part of this fall.

1 DAY TOUR PAK OU CAVE AND KUANG SI WATERFALL
Trip Overview
See two of Luang Prabang’s most popular attractions in one tour by minivan. In the morning, we’ll enjoy a drive by minivan to the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou Rivers where we’ll cross the Mekong River by boat to explore the upper and lower Pak Ou Caves, famous for the thousands of Buddhist statues. After a drive along the Mekong River in the warmer afternoon hours, we’ll enjoy the refreshing Kuang Si Waterfall in beautiful jungle canopy and visit the Bear Sanctuary. On our way back to Luang Prabang we experience the Lao Buffalo Dairy farm.
Itinerary
Pak Ou Cave, Kuang Si Waterfall & Bear Sanctuary
The Pak Ou Cave and Kuang Si Waterfall lie to the north and south of Luang Prabang city, respectively. This tour will take you to both, with a scenic drive up and down the length of the Mekong River between.
Meet your guide early morning for a forty minute drive to the Pak Ou Village where you are free to explore the many crafts that the locals make before crossing the mighty Mekong River by small boat to the base of a limestone cliff, the site of the Pak Ou Cave. The lower cave is impressive and filled with Buddhist statues and relics. Take your time to explore the reverent scene scented with burning incense and overlooking the impressive Mekong landscape. Up a winding series of stairs, grab a flashlight and you'll find another fascinating and easily navigated cave to explore with it's ancient Buddhist relics before we have lunch.
Afterward, we’ll cross the Mekong again by boat and continue with a drive downriver for 1.5 hours to the famous Kuang Si Waterfall. On the way we’ll stop to see the popular Whiskey Village and sample the locally made Lao Lao. The jungle around the waterfall remains lush and beautiful year-round. The waterfall cycles between placid, turquoise waters during the dry season to impressive, roaring falls during the rainy season. Either way, you’re in for a refreshing and beautiful nature experience. Integrated into the landscape is an Asiatic Bear Sanctuary where you can see these beautiful creatures up close and support efforts to care for the animals in the area.
Buffalo Dairy
Experience the new Lao Buffalo dairy that produces cheese and a range of delicious dairy products. The diary provides income and a sustainable future for the Lao people involved. Learn how to milk a Buffalo, cuddle a Buffalo for the perfect selfie and try some incredible ice cream. The Buffalo may be the stars of the show but the playful pigs, chickens and cute rabbits are also plenty of fun for the young and young at heart!
We will end this full day with a return drive to Luang Prabang late afternoon and in time for your own evening activities.
Note that the stairs are short but steep into the lower Pak Ou Cave containing the thousands of Buddhist statues. Access to the upper cave is via a fairly long series of stairs and can be taken at your own pace.
