XIANGKHOUANG CULTURE TOURS
Xiangkhouang is home to the famous plain of jars, one of the most important prehistoric sites in Southeast Asia. It consists of thousands of stone jars spread in three different sites. These three sites are located on upland valleys and lower foothills of the central plain of the Xiangkhouang Plateau. The surrounding mystical atmosphere makes of this place a must-see for all travelers in Laos.
30 kilometers south from the provincial capital of Phonsavan lays the former royal town of Muang Khoun. Once the royal capital of the Phuan Kingdom in the 14th century, Muang Khoun is renowned for its lavish stupas and temples. Unfortunately, Chinese Haw bandits in the 19th century and then French during the first Indochina War damaged or destroyed some of the temples. Nevertheless, some well-preserved stupas and temples, such as Wat Phiawat and That Dam, French colonial architecture buildings and mystical ruins make of Muang Khoun a great combo one-Day excursion trip with the plain of jars.
Muang Kham is a quiet town located 55 kilometers North-East from Phonsavan. The city is known for the Tham Piew cave, site of a war-time massacre where almost 400 civilians were killed during the Secret War. Visit of the Tham Piew Cave also includes a small museum providing usefull information on the Secret War. Due to its rather remote location Muang Kham constitutes a one-Day excursion trip on its own. Such excursion usually includes some stops in local villages to learn more about local culture and handicraft.
